Class. On 19.5.17 the naval constructors in the ports were invited to submit plans in a competition to produce a new type of 50-gun frigate armed with 24p guns. The specifications for the new class, including the dimensions, were based on the experimental frigate
Flore designed by Caro in 1797 with 30-24p and 20-8p. On 13.7.19 the number of 36p carronades was increased from 18 to 26, making the ships 58-gunners. The spardeck armament was a response to the 32pdrs on British and American frigates. The ships' captains complained repeatedly about the excessive artillery which, among other things, reduced the height of the battery above the water from 6ft 5in in the 50-gun design to 5ft 8in as built. After 1823 various reductions were made in the armaments of individual ships. The first ship of the type to be completed,
Jeanne d'Arc, and one sister were designed by Simon.
Amazone served as gunnery training ship at Toulon in 1840, relieving the corvettes
Alcmène and
Sabine which the school had used since its creation in 1837.
Disposals. Jeanne d'Arc still existed in 1850 as a training ship for seamen at Brest. She disappeared before hulks were added to the Navy List in 1865.
Amazone was towed from Cherbourg to Brest in 1841 for use as a hulk; her final disposition is also unknown.
