Class. In response to the problems with the
Jeanne d'Arc type, the ministry issued specifications for a second-class frigate with a slightly increased beam and a more realistic armament of 52 guns, mostly 24pdrs. Hubert completed the plans for the first ships of this type in 1826. The designed height of battery of this class and its successors was 6ft 7in at load draft. The standard artillery of this type was changed in 1838 to a 50-gun armament of 30pdrs after successful trials in at least one ship,
Artémise.
Virginie, orginally
Niobé, was renamed 23.11.39.
Cléopâtre and
Danaé were commissioned briefly in 1838 to move from St. Servan to Brest and were commissioned later for active service as indicated above.
Disposals. Artémise was renamed
Arc en Ciel before 1865 as a hulk and was BU 1887.
Andromède became a hulk, was renamed
Athlète 1883, and was BU 1887.
Néréide became a guard hulk and was BU 1896.
Gloire was lost on the west coast of Korea with the corvette
Victorieuse.
Cléopâtre became a storage hulk at Cherbourg and was BU 1869.
Virginie became a storage hulk and was BU 1888.

Disposals. Poursuivante became headquarters hulk for the reserve fleet at Cherbourg in 1862 and was BU 1890.

Class. Plans for this standard 52-gun frigate class were completed by Perroy in 4.28. A probable sister,
Clorinde, was scheduled to be begun in 1837 at Brest but was deferred and cancelled in 1838.

Alceste was converted into a convict transport for New Caledonia 1867-68.
Disposals. Reine Blanche became a mooring hulk at Rochefort, was renamed
Vigoreux before 1865, and was BU 1885.
Alceste became a hospital hulk at Gabon and was BU 1891.
