Class. In 1843 Boucher prepared plans for two 3rd class frigates with an increased beam and a new arrangement of gun ports to accomodate the 40-gun armament of 30pdrs specified in 1838. He used the same plans, modified to accomodate a steam engine and screw propeller, for a third ship,
Pomone. Two repeat sailing ships were subsequently added. The design provided for a height of battery of 6ft 11in.
Psyché had her gun ports rearranged in 1845 for an experimental armament of large shell guns, which was to be compared with the more conventional armament planned for
Clorinde and
Pomone. Because of an error in drafting the plans,
Isis was given
Psyché's experimental gun port arrangement.
Isis was commissioned as a transport during the Crimean war and never embarked her frigate armament. She later served as seagoing seamen's training ship, and when relieved by
Résolue in 1877 she carried an armament of 8-14cm M1870 BLR.
Disposals. Psyché became a headquarters hulk and was BU 1875.
Isis became a headquarters hulk at Cherbourg and was BU 1900.
