Class. Dauphin was one of three 180nhp ships whose construction was decided upon in 7.44.
Epervier was added 1.46 to keep her builder's yard occupied. They were designed by De Lavrignais. They represented an effort to bring the latest technology to the 160nhp type: iron hulls, tubular boilers, and direct-acting engines all helped increase the engine power while reducing the size of the ship. The coal supply and armament were also reduced, the latter because the 160-180nhp type was now considered strictly an aviso, not a fighting ship. The designed rig was two light masts. In the engines of
Dauphin, direct action was achieved through the use of articulated guides, while
Epervier's engines used Penn's system of oscillating cylinders. Both patterns were used in numerous French navy steamers, even though
Epervier only developed 160nhp on trials.
Disposals. Dauphin was BU 1868 and
Epervier was wrecked on Cape Breton.
