The emperor ordered this experimental "screw craft with a carapace" transferred to the navy from his household. The navy took her over at her moorings at St. Cloud on 24.3.62, but the only use they could find for her was to put her engines into a water barge. Renamed Prolonge as a barge, she was BU at Cherbourg 1867-68.

On 9.7.60 Gouin at Nantes contracted to supply a special craft requested by the emperor. As the navy referred to Tortue in 1862 as built by Arman, this may have been another, unknown, imperial experiment.
