Notes: As of 27 August 1918 the EFC had awarded to Crosby Navigation Co. its contract 469 for two 2500-ton Ferris Design 1067 three-masted wooden schooner barges, but Crosby had not yet formally accepted it. The contract was finally signed on 29 September 1918, and on 21 October 1918 it was mailed to Crosby for execution. On 30 October 1918 the two barges were named Hallowell and Gardiner. At some point during this process the contract was modified to provide for one 2500-ton Ferris barge (Hallowell) and one 3500 ton barge to Crosby's design (designated Design 1129 by the EFC) which the firm may have prepared for a private order. This unique barge was laid down on 12 October 1918, renamed Suburra on 13 December 1918 and Richmond on 23 June 1919, launched on 11 September 1919, and delivered to the Division of Operation on 19 September 1919 and to the EFC on 4 October 1919. Barely three months later, on 5 January 1920, Richmond was lost on the Mayport Breakwater (probably at Mayport, Florida). |
