Preliminary Design Plan for a Battleship ... February 19, 1919

A preliminary design plan for a new battleship under consideration for construction with Fiscal Year 1920 funding. The Preliminary Design Book No.215 that presumably recorded this design work ("Capital Ship 1920") is missing at the National Archives and thus the origins and purposes of this design currently are unknown. This drawing shows a ship that resembles the preceding South Dakota (Battleship # 49) class in overall layout and armament but that has been lengthened and enlarged to achieve higher speed. (See Photo # S-584-147 for an alternative design considered for such a 1920 battleship).
This plan provides twelve 16-inch guns, electric drive machinery, and a speed of 25 knots in a ship 730 feet long on the waterline, 106 feet in beam, and with a normal displacement of 47, 000 tons.
Note: The original document was ink on linen (black on white).

The original plan is in the 1911-1925 "Spring Styles Book".
