Class Notes:
FY 1944. On 11 Jun 43 the Auxiliary Vessels Board recommended a large program of auxiliary vessels to support the 1943 program of combatant vessels approved by the President in May 1943. The emphasis of this program was on tenders, but in addition the Board noted that Naval construction facilities were available for building a limited number of various smaller types of auxiliary craft. These included 18 205' fleet tugs to be completed and delivered at the rate of one per month beginning in the third quarter of 1944.

In these tugs a large smokestack as in the NAVAJO (AT-64) class was restored, except that it was lower and had a conspicuous cap. These ships were otherwise virtually identical to the preceding AT-96 and AT-64 classes.

The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1997 (23 Sep 96) included a provision sponsored by Congressman Bart Stupak of Michigan instructing the Navy to transfer six obsolete tugboats, ATF-105, 110, 149, 158, 159, and 160, to the Northeast Wisconsin Railroad Transportation Commission, an instrumentality of the State of Wisconsin, provided they were not needed for transfer or donation elsewhere. The Ontonagan County Economic Development Corporation signed for custody of the vessels on behalf of the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad, which operates a freight service in Northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and which wanted their diesel engines (4 per tug) to put in their locomotives. Ultimately only four tugs were transferred, the Navy instead expending ATF-149 and 158 as targets.
