USS Arctic (1855-1859)

"The American Steam-Ship Arctic, employed in sounding for the Atlantic Telegraph."
This is one of two illustrations published in the Illustrated London News on 13 September 1856 with a letter to the editor from Cork Harbor, Ireland, on the recent soundings for the Atlantic telegraph. Arctic sailed from Newfoundland to Ireland and back between July and September 1856 taking frequent soundings each way.

This is one of two illustrations published in the Illustrated London News on 13 September 1856 with a letter to the editor from Cork Harbor, Ireland, on the recent soundings for the Atlantic telegraph. This illustration shows the sounding apparatus on Arctic, and the accompanying letter gives a detailed description of how it was operated.
