S.S. Havana (U.S. Passenger Ship, 1906)

Photographed before World War I in service for the Ward Line on its route between New York and Havana.

USS Mercy (1917-1939)

In pattern camouflage paint instead of hospital ship markings, probably for her first voyage to Europe in early November 1918 just before the armistace.

At St. Nazaire, France, probably in early 1919 during one of her later voyages to France to return casualties to the United States.
Note the hospital ship markings, which included a red cross on the side of the ship and crosses on the smokestacks.

She has the same general type of hospital ship markings as her sister in early 1919 but they differ in style.

USS Comfort (1917-1925)

With USAT Mount Vernon alongside at the Mare Island Navy Yard in January 1920.
Comfort is undergoing machinery repairs during which her smokestacks were removed to permit replacement of her boilers. The Navy never completed these repairs.

S.S. Havana, ex USS Comfort (AH-3)

This artist's concept was submitted when the rebuilt hospital ship underwent Navy inspection in 1928 before entering service with her original owners. At that time she was assigned the identification number ID-4807.

USAHS Shamrock (U.S. Army Hospital Ship)

In port, circa 1943-1945.
Previously this ship was the Army Transport Agwileon in 1942-1943 and, in 1917-1925, served as USS Comfort.
