Shown on 2 June 1941 beginning conversion to USS West Point (AP-23).
The Navy formally acquired the ship four days later.

Near the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. on 15 June 1941, her commissioning date.
External conversion work accomplished beweenn 2 and 15 June included repainting the ship and hanging liferafts over the promenade deck. The armament has not yet been installed.

West Point called at Melbourne, Australia, on 4-6 March during a voyage from San Francisco to Bombay, India, with over 7,900 passengers on board.

After 5"/51 gun battery photographed at San Francisco on 22 April 1944.
The two guns are in superfiring positions on the centerline at the extreme stern of the ship, with a blast screen protecting the lower gun. Note also the liferafts in their racks on the ship's side.
