Class Notes:
FY 1942 (ASR-12), 1944 (ASR 19-20). Construction of these vessels as fleet tugs of the NAVAJO (AT-64) class was directed by SecNav on 16 Feb 42 (ASR-12) and by the Auxiliary Vessels Board on 11 Jun 43 (ASR 19-20). CHETCO (AT-99) was reclassified ASR-12 and renamed PENGUIN on 23 Sep 43. The reclassification of ATF 164-165 to ASR 19-20 was recommended on 7 Nov 45 and approved on 13 Nov 45. They received new names on 5 Dec 45. ASR-12 was of the variant of the NAVAJO class that lacked a smokestack (listed here as the AT-99 class) while the other two were of the final NAVAJO class variant that had a short stack with a large cap (listed here as the AT-148 class).
