Class Notes:
All five of these tugs were purchased from current appropriations as service craft for Navy Yards and were not specifically authorized. They were transferred from the list of yard craft to the Navy Register as Tugs Nos. 14-18 on 15 Dec 15. In size they were small seagoing tugs, and the survivors were demoted to district tugs (YT) in 1936. ARAPAHO and MOHAVE were ordered to the East Coast in early 1918 to support the fleet, MOHAVE later joining the Naval Overseas Transportation Service and towing coal barges between Norfolk and New England between August and December 1918. TILLAMOOK performed her entire 33-year career at Mare Island. Three of the five proved to be extremely long lived in commercial service. The dimensions of the two ordered from Navy Yards differed from the three earlier contract built tugs whose measurements are shown here, WANDO and CHEMUNG being recorded as measuring 123.5' oa, 115.0' pp x 25.0' m, 26.7' over guards x 11.5' mn. The other published characteristics of the two groups were identical.

The names ARAPAHO, MOHAVE, and TILLAMOOK were assigned by General Order No. 97 of 9 May 14 to Tugs Nos. 14-16, and there is no indication that No. 14 previously had the name HURON as sometimes reported. This report probably refers to ALLEGHENY (AT-19), which originally did bear this name.
