Class Notes:
Funded by BuShips maintenance funds. Small steel motor cargo ship. Acquisition originally directed by SecNav 29 Nov 40. Negotiations were conducted in February 1941 for her acquisition as a seagoing ferry (AG) to operate between the mainland and San Clemente Is., California, but BuShips objected to the price and the project was dropped in March. She was again selected in January 1942 to carry cargo between section bases in Alaska. (Her provisional type designator in the January 1942 correspondence was AGc, possibly miscellaneous auxiliary, coastal.) After acquisition and conversion she was placed in full commission with the designation YAG-11 on 22 May 42. BARANOF was transferred to San Francisco 16 Jan 44 and assigned to the Floating Dry Dock Training Center, Tiburon, Calif. She was used in January 1944 with the floating drydocks ARD-15 and ARD-47 to train personnel in docking and undocking ships and probably continued in this service after being decommissioned 2 Mar 44. The name BARANOF was cancelled 1 Mar 45 because, according to CNO, the majority of the District Craft Auxiliary, Miscellaneous (YAG) were not named. The ship was placed out of service at Treasure Island, Calif., 5 Nov 45.
