Frieda, a 3365 gross ton bulk cargo carrier, was built in 1913 at Quincy, Massachusetts, for the Union Sulpher Co. She was commissioned at Hoboken, New Jersey, in October 1918 as USS Frieda (ID # 1618) and employed as a freighter. The ship loaded a cargo of Army supplies and sailed from New York in a convoy bound for Rochefort, France, where she arrived in November. Upon her return to New York in December the Navy decided to demobilize her but first had to carrry out extensive repairs. USS Frieda was decommissioned in January 1919 and delivered to the U.S. Shipping Board for simultaneous return to her owners. The ship was sold to a Chinese firm in 1937 as Peh Shan and was soon renamed Norse Carrier. Taken over by the Japanese Government in 1941 as Sana Maru, she was sunk by USS Kingfish (SS-234) off the coast of Indochina on 20 October 1943.
