10,000 Ton Cruiser -- Modified CL-49 & 50". Plan dated
5 October 1939 & revised 31 October, representing a preliminary
design for the Cleveland (CL-55) class light cruisers.
- S-511-2: "Proposed
7500 Ton Cruiser". Plan dated 9 November 1939 for a
smaller cruiser with a dual-purpose main battery of twelve 5"/54
guns ("CLD").

Plan dated 2 November 1939, representing a preliminary design
for the Baltimore class heavy cruisers (CA-68).

for a 25,600 ton cruiser with a main battery of nine 12"
guns. A design studied during the process leading to the Alaska

1939 for a 24,250 ton aircraft carrier, with partial plans for
two related schemes. A design studied during the development
of the Essex class aircraft carriers.

Flight Deck Cruiser". Plan dated 8 December 1939 for
a 12,000 ton flight deck cruiser ("CF") with a main
battery of three 8" guns.
- S-511-10: "Proposed
Aircraft Carrier - Scheme CV-9E". Plan dated 4 January
1940 for a 25,000 ton aircraft carrier. This is a modification
of the design seen in S-511-8.
- S-511-11: "Battleship
Design Study, BB-65 -- Scheme 3 - (1940 Studies)". Plan
dated 6 February 1940 for a 52,500 ton battleship with a main
battery of twelve 16" guns. A design studied during the
process leading to the Montana (BB-67) class battleships,
the first of which was at that time to have hull number BB-65.
- S-511-12: "Battleship
Design Study, BB-65 -- Scheme 4 - (1940 Studies)". Plan
dated 14 February 1940 for a 54,500 ton battleship with a main
battery of twelve 16" guns. A design studied during the
process leading to the Montana class.
- S-511-13: "Battleship
Design Study, BB-65 -- Scheme 8 - (1940 Studies)". Plan
dated 15 March 1940 for a 70,000 ton battleship with a main battery
of twelve 16" guns. A design studied during the process
leading to the Montana class battleships.
- S-511-14: "Heavy
Cruiser Study, Scheme 2". Plan dated 19 March 1940 for
a 15,750 ton cruiser with a main battery of twelve 8" guns.
A design studied during the process leading to the Alaska
(CB-1) class large cruisers.
- S-511-15: "Heavy
Cruiser Study, Scheme 3". Plan dated 20 March 1940 for
a 17,300 ton cruiser with a main battery of six 12" guns.
A design studied during the process leading to the Alaska
(CB-1) class.

Cruiser Study, Scheme 4-A "convertible"".
Plan dated 10 April 1940 for a 17,500 ton cruiser with a main
battery of twelve 8" guns (convertible to six 12" guns).
A design studied during the process leading to the Alaska
(CB-1) class.
- S-511-17: "12-Inch
Gun Cruiser Study, CA-2F". Plan dated 19 June 1940 for
a 24,700 ton cruiser with a main battery of seven 12" guns.
It includes hull sections for design schemes CA-2E through CA-2I.
These designs were studied during the process leading to the
Alaska (CB-1) class.
- S-511-18: "6-Inch
Cruiser Study ... Scheme 2". Plan dated 28 July 1940
for a 13,200 ton cruiser with a main battery of 12 6"/47
guns. It offers greater speed and protection than the Cleveland
(CL-55) class, with the same gun armament.
- S-511-19: "6-Inch
Cruiser Study ... Scheme 1". Plan dated 28 July 1940
for a 13,200 ton cruiser with a main battery of 12 6"/47
guns. Similar to S-511-18, but with aircraft facilities aft rather
than amidships.
- S-511-20: "15000-Ton
Aircraft Carrier (CVX) Study". Plan dated 20 July 1940
for a ship similar to USS Wasp (CV-7), but with greater
speed. A design developed in response to a request from the General
Board for smaller carrier design possibilities.
- S-511-21: "Battleship
Study, BB 65 - Scheme 1 and BB 61-64 (Incl{usive})".
Plan dated 9 July 1940, comparing the outboard profile of the
Iowa (BB-61) class battleships with the hull profile of
the Montana (BB-67) class. At this time the first Montana
class ship was to be BB-65.
- S-511-22: Study of
Light Cruiser with 6-Inch Guns, "Scheme 2". Plan
dated 25 July 1940 for a 13,200 ton cruiser with a main battery
of 12 6"/47 guns. This is a slightly earlier version of
S-511-18.
- S-511-23: "8100
Ton 5" Cruiser (Double Purpose) Design Study".
Plan dated 28 November 1940 for a cruiser with a dual-purpose
main battery of sixteen 5"/54 guns. This "CLD"
design is a later development of that seen in S-511-2.
- S-511-24: "Net
Layer ... Scheme "B" (Adaptation of Minelayer (CM 5)
Design)". Plan dated 31 August 1940, prepared during
the development of the AN 1-4 class.
- S-511-25: "8-Inch
Cruiser Study - Scheme CA-B". Plan dated 16 September
1940 for a 17,000 ton cruiser with a main battery of 12 8"/55
guns and more protection than in the Baltimore (CA-68)
class.
- S-511-26: "Submarine
Rescue Vessel (A.S.R.) - Design Study "B"".
Plan dated 17 October 1940 for relatively large ship that appears
to be based on that of the Barnegat (AVP-10) class small
seaplane tenders.
- S-511-27: "Submarine
Rescue Vessel (A.S.R.) - Design Study "A"".
Plan dated 17 October 1940 for 240-foot ship of about the same
size as adopted for the Chanticleer (ASR-7) class.
- S-511-28: "Aircraft
Carrier Study - Scheme "B"". Plan dated 10
December 1940, during the process that led to the armored flight
deck Midway (CVB-41) class. This 38,500-ton design carries
6"/47 dual-purpose guns and has a lightly-armored flight
deck.
- S-511-29: "8-Inch
Cruiser, Scheme CA-C". Plan dated 18 March 1941 for
a 20,000 ton cruiser with a main battery of 12 8"/55 guns,
more protection than in the Baltimore (CA-68) class, and
a speed of 35 knots.
- S-511-30: "Escort
Vessel (Corvette) - (Flower Class) - With Extended Forecastle,
Increased Sheer, & Fuller Lines Fwd". Plan dated April
1941 for a modification of the British "Flower" class
corvette.
- S-511-31: "Net
Layer". Plan dated 22 July 1940 (with modifications
of 20 August 1940) for a 3000 ton net layer, 360 feet long.
- S-511-32: "Net
Layer - Preliminary Design Study - Scheme "A"".
Plan dated 30 August 1940 for a 4600 ton (full load) net layer,
375 feet long.
- S-511-33: "Mine
Sweeper - Adaptation of PC 452 Type". Plan dated 6 January
1941 for a 360 ton (full load), 170 foot long minesweeper based
on the 173-foot steel submarine chaser design. Probably prepared
during consideration of what became the Adroit (AM-82)
class.
- S-511-34: "Proposed
Mine Sweeper - Design Study". Plan dated 2 May 1941
for a 750 ton (full load), 180 foot long minesweeper. Probably
prepared during consideration of what became the Admirable
(AM-136) class.
- S-511-34-A: "Aircraft
Carrier Study - Scheme "A"". Plan dated 5
June 1941, during the process that led to the armored flight
deck Midway (CVB-41) class. This 44,500-ton ship has a
lightly armored flight deck and three triple eight-inch gun turrets
on a hull too wide to pass through the existing Panama Canal
locks.
- S-511-35: "Coastal
Mine Layer - Design Study". Plan dated 12 June 1941
for a 2125 ton, 275 foot long mine layer.
- S-511-36: "6"
A.A. Cruiser Scheme "C" - 4 Twin Turrets".
Plan dated 31 July 1941, prepared during the development of what
became the Worcester (CL-144) class. This scheme emphasizes
somewhat smaller size and enhanced protection, at the expense
of speed and number of main battery guns.
- S-511-37: "6"
A.A. Cruiser Scheme "B" - 6 Twin Turrets".
Plan dated 31 July 1941, prepared during the development of what
became the Worcester (CL-144) class. This scheme emphasizes
speed and number of main battery guns, with reduced protection.
- S-511-38: "6"
A.A. Cruiser Scheme "A" - 4 Triple Turrets".
Plan dated 31 July 1941, prepared during the development of what
became the Worcester (CL-144) class. This scheme emphasizes
speed and number of main battery guns, with reduced protection.
- S-511-39: "Scheme
"A" - Destroyer Study". Plan dated July 1941,
prepared during consideration of updated versions of the Benson
(DD-421) and Gleaves (DD-423) classes. This 1810-ton design
provides a pair of 40mm twin gun mounts and ten torpedo tubes.
- S-511-40: "Scheme
"A-I" - Destroyer Study". Plan dated July
1941, prepared during consideration of updated versions of the
Benson (DD-421) and Gleaves (DD-423) classes. This
1795-ton design provides a pair of 40mm twin gun mounts, two
20mm single guns, five torpedo tubes and a generally less crowded
arrangement.
- S-511-41: "CV-D
-Aircraft Carrier". Plan dated 12 July 1941, during
the process that led to the armored flight deck Midway
(CVB-41) class. This 28,000-ton ship has a 1.5-inch armored flight
deck on a relatively short (788-foot) hull.
- S-511-42: "Aircraft
Carrier Study - Scheme "CV-E"". Plan dated
22 September 1941, during the process that led to the armored
flight deck Midway (CVB-41) class. This 45,000-ton ship
has two-inch thick flight deck armor and a hull too wide to pass
through the existing Panama Canal locks. It was the general basis
for the actual Midway class design.
- S-511-43: "Aircraft
Carrier Converted from 6" Cruiser (Class CL55)".
Plan dated 25 August 1941, during the development of what became
the Independence class small aircraft carrier design.
It features a conventional island and an anti-aircraft battery
of four quadruple 40mm gun mounts.
- S-511-44: "Aircraft
Carrier Converted from 6" Cruiser Class CL55".
Plan dated 4 September 1941. Similar to S-511-43, but with an
anti-aircraft battery of eight twin 40mm gun mounts.
- S-511-45: "CV
9-19 Aircraft Carrier". Plan dated 23 September 1941,
apparently showing the arrangement finally accepted for the Essex
(CV-9) class aircraft carriers.
- S-511-46: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - 5 Twin Turrets - Scheme D". Plan dated
18 October 1941, prepared during the development of what became
the Worcester (CL-144) class. This scheme emphasizes deck
armor over speed and number of main battery guns.
- S-511-47: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - 6 Twin Turrets - Scheme ... not submitted".
Plan dated 20 October 1941, prepared during the development of
what became the Worcester (CL-144) class. This scheme
was replaced by that shown in S-511-55.
- S-511-48: "49.5
ft. Tank Lighter - Design Study". Plan dated December
1941 for a landing craft of LCM size. Includes data tables for
four different tank lighters, including 50-foot and 48-foot Higgins
designs, plus 47-foot and 49.5-foot types designed by the Bureau
of Ships.
- S-511-49: "100
ft. Tank Landing Craft - Design Study". Plan dated 21
January 1942 for a landing craft similar to the LCT(5) type,
but with two assembly sections instead of three.
- S-511-50: "Aircraft
Carrier, Converted from 12" Cruiser (Class CB 1-6)".
Plan dated 3 January 1942 for converting an Alaska class
large cruiser to an aircraft carrier. A design studied as part
of an exploration of carrier conversions of warship hulls then
under construction.
- S-511-51 through S-511-51-F: "Scheme "B"
- Destroyer Study". Plans prepared during consideration
of what became the Allen M. Sumner (DD-692) class:
- S-511-51: "Scheme
"B-VII"" (a revision of Scheme "B-II").
Plan dated 10 March 1942 for a 2270-ton destroyer with three
twin 5"/38 gun mounts (two forward, one aft), ten torpedo
tubes and a pair of twin 40mm A.A. gun mounts. This design formed
the basis for the DD-692 class.
- Note that Scheme "B-VI" is not among these plans.
- S-511-51-A: "Scheme
"B"". Plan dated 30 September 1941 for a 2150-ton
destroyer, not greatly different from the original Fletcher
class design, but with a pair of 40mm twin A.A. gun mounts.
- S-511-51-B: "Scheme
"B-V"". Plan dated 30 September 1941 for a
2215-ton destroyer with two twin 5"/38 gun mounts forward
and a single 5"/38 gun mount aft, two banks of three torpedo
tubes each, and four twin 40mm A.A. gun mounts (one on each corner
of the after deckhouse).
- S-511-51-C: "Scheme
"B-IV"". Plan dated 30 September 1941 for
a 2185-ton destroyer with two twin 5"/38 gun mounts (both
forward), two banks of three torpedo tubes each, and four twin
40mm A.A. gun mounts (one on each corner of the after deckhouse).
- S-511-51-D: "Scheme
"B-III"". Plan dated 30 September 1941 for
a 2180-ton destroyer with two twin 5"/38 gun mounts (one
forward, one atop the after deckhouse), two banks of three torpedo
tubes each, and four twin 40mm A.A. gun mounts (two forward,
one amidships on the port side, one aft).
- S-511-51-E: "Scheme
"B-II"". Plan dated 30 September 1941 for
a 2200-ton destroyer with three twin 5"/38 gun mounts (two
forward, one aft), five torpedo tubes and a pair of twin 40mm
A.A. gun mounts.
- S-511-51-F: "Scheme
"B-I"". Plan dated 30 September 1941 for a
2135-ton destroyer, not greatly different from the original Fletcher
class design, but with a pair of 40mm twin A.A. gun mounts and
only five torpedo tubes.
- Drawing S-511-51-G was renumbered S-511-51-A
after it was discovered that the original drawing number had
been interpreted incorrectly.
- S-511-52: "20
Knot Oiler - Preliminary Study". Plan dated 21 March
1942 for a 28,000 ton high-speed oiler.
- S-511-53: "20
Knot Flightdeck Oiler - Preliminary Study". Plan dated
21 March 1942 for a 30,000 ton high-speed oiler with similar
configuration to an escort aircraft carrier.
- S-511-53-A: "5"/54
D.P. Cruiser - Design Study "A"". Plan dated
20 June 1942, for a modified Atlanta (CL-51) class light
cruiser with five twin 5"/54 gun mounts.
- S-511-54: "Aircraft
Carrier, Converted from BB 61-66 Class". Plan dated
June 1942 for converting an Iowa class battleship to an
aircraft carrier. A design studied as part of an exploration
of carrier conversions of warship hulls then under construction.
- S-511-54-A: "Proposed
Conversion of CA 68 Class to CV". Plan dated 4 June
1942 for converting a Baltimore class heavy cruiser to
an aircraft carrier. A design considered during an exploration
of carrier conversions of warship hulls then under construction.
It is generally similar to what became the Saipan (CVL-48)
class, but with less freeboard.
- S-511-55: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - 5 Twin Turrets - Scheme E". Plan dated
11 July 1942, prepared during the development of what became
the Worcester (CL-144) class. It represents an effort
to limit ship size by reducing armor protection.
- S-511-56: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - 6 Twin Turrets - Scheme "F"" (an
initial effort, submitted in revised form). Plan dated 23
December 1942, prepared during the development of what became
the Worcester (CL-144) class. This design was not submitted
in this form, but rather as presented in S-511-57.
- S-511-57: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - 6 Twin Turrets - Scheme "F"".
Plan dated 30 December 1942, prepared during the development
of what became the Worcester (CL-144) class. Compared
to the design seen in S-511-56, this scheme features lower positions
for some turrets and several other changes.
- S-511-58: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - Scheme "I"". Plan dated May
1943, prepared during the development of what became the Worcester
(CL-144) class. This design, marking a return to a flush deck
hull but still with aircraft facilities amidships, was not submitted
for the General Board's consideration.
- S-511-59: "Transport
(AP) - Converted from "AN"". Plan dated 7
January 1943 for a 8575-ton (full load), 440-foot long personnel
and vehicle transport converted from a net layer (see Photo
# S-511-24). Probably the preliminary design for what became
the Osage (LSV-3) class.
- S-511-60: "6"
A.A. Cruiser - Scheme "F" Revised" (Not Submitted).
Plan dated 13 February 1943, prepared during the development
of what became the Worcester (CL-144) class. It is a modification
the design seen in S-511-57, featuring a single smokestack and
all main battery gun directors on the centerline.
- S-511-61: "Single
Cal.{iber} 6" Cruiser - Scheme "J"".
Plan dated 31 May 1943 and revised in June and July 1943, prepared
during the development of what became the Worcester (CL-144)
class. It features twelve main battery guns and a flush deck
hull, with aircraft facilities located aft. Versions with one
and two smokestacks are shown.
- S-511-62: "300'
DE Class Conversion to Bombardment Ship or Anti-Aircraft Ship".
Plan dated 7 September 1943 (with an additional note of 25 October
1943), prepared during consideration of different roles for steam-powered
escort ships (DE) then under construction.
- S-511-63: "Aircraft
Carrier - 1943 CVL Type". Plan dated 28 August 1943
(with alterations through 27 September 1943), prepared during
the development of the Saipan (CVL-48) class small aircraft
carriers.
- S-511-64: "CA
139-142, 134 ... 8"/55 Rapid Fire Cruisers ... General Arrangement".
Plan dated 1 December 1943, during preparation of the Des
Moines (CA-134) heavy cruiser design.
- S-511-65: "8"
Cruiser of New Design [1943] ... General Arrangement".
Plan dated 1 October 1943, during preparation of the design for
Des Moines (CA-134) heavy cruisers.
- S-511-66: "5"/54
Cal. Cruiser - Scheme "C"". Plan dated 30
November 1944, for a 580-foot, 8550-ton (trial displacement)
light cruiser armed with a new automatic-loading 5"/54 gun
mount. It was the basis for the abortive CL-154 class, cancelled
in March 1945.
